Lehigh Acres man facing charge after 8-year-old accidentally shot

LEHIGH ACRES

A 56-year-old Lee County man is facing a misdemeanor charge after one of his children was shot with a firearm that wasn’t stored properly.

According to a warrant request affidavit, Pedro Luis Estevez did not secure two guns properly which led to the accidental shooting of his 8-year-old son in November.

Estevez said he left two guns in a kitchen cabinet above the stove because his home was not locked in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian.

But besides that, Estevez said, he keeps his guns secured and locked away.

On Nov. 14, two of the couple’s sons were sent to bed to sleep, but instead, they went to the kitchen, and the 8-year-old climbed on top of the counter, and grabbed the guns from the cabinet.

The kids went back to their bedroom.

In their bedroom, one of the brothers disengaged the safety, which led to the gun firing and injuring the 8-year-old boy in the hand and his foot.

According to the report, it’s unclear if the boy shot himself or the younger brother fired the gun by mistake.

Estevez and his wife are parents to five children, who they fostered and then later adopted, according to the report.

It’s unclear if Estevez has been arrested.
