Sunsplash in Cape Coral reopening in March

CAPE CORAL

Cape Coral’s popular waterpark, Sunsplash, is adding 60 days to its season this year.

For month’s no one has been able to enjoy the slides, pools are staircases at Sunsplash Waterpark.

The Cape Coral attraction is typically known for being a fun place for families to enjoy the sunshine.

But when Hurricane Ian hit, and with no water to operate safely, Sunsplash had to end their season early.

“We offered our parking lot and park to first responders, recovery teams. So they actually were on property before us using our parking lot and park as a staging ground to render aid wherever they could to begin that disaster recovery process,” said Ron McKenzie, chief marketing officer for ProParks Attractions Group.

And that’s still the case nearly four months after Ian.

Trailers are everywhere with signs designating the space as a FEMA Recovery Center.

But when you take a second look, you’ll see crew are also hard at work making repairs inside, gearing up for a new season of fun.

The waterpark will reopen on March 11 for pass holders. It will reopen to the public on March 18.

“We’re going to actually offer our longest season ever at Sunsplash. We’ve added 60 calendar days to our operating calendar. So, we’ll be running March 11, all the way through just past Thanksgiving,” McKenzie said.

That means more time for kids of all ages to get lost in pirate’s cove or find the courage to go down Cape Fear.

McKenzie said he hopes to offer normalcy to customers and steady work to those looking for a job.

“We’ve got a job for you. We’d love to have you; we welcome you with open arms for sure,” McKenzie said.

McKenzie said the hiring process is underway.
