A woman from Port Charlotte has been arrested after Florida Highway Patrol says she hit a man on a bicycle and left the scene.
According to an arrest report, Jasmine Haney, 22, hit the bicyclist near the Edgewater Drive and Bayshore Road intersection in Charlotte County around 5:15 p.m. Monday.
The arrest report says Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office deputies had responded to a hit-and-run and had stopped the suspect’s vehicle a short distance away on Bayshore Rd.
Video from the nearby gas station was obtained by FHP, who says it shows Haney turning into the gas station from Edgewater Dr. directly in the path of the man on the cyclist, who then collided with her SUV and was thrown to the ground.
According to the arrest report, the crash occurred right in front of a CCSO deputy.
The arrest report says the man on the bicycle was 65 years old and taken to Gulf Coast Medical Center with a traumatic brain injury due to the crash. It says he had a fractured skull and several other injuries.
Troopers say Haney is seen on the surveillance video accelerating away from the scene after the crash.
When troopers spoke to Haney, she told them she had seen the bicyclist before she made her turn, heard a loud thump from the back of her vehicle, but believed she had hit the curb. Troopers say that after she drove away, she thought she might have hit the cyclist, so she turned around to go back to the scene but was stopped by CCSO deputies before she could make it back.
According to the arrest report, when asked if a reasonable person would have thought they were in a crash in an identical situation, Haney said yes.
Haney was arrested for leaving the scene of a crash with injuries and driving without a valid license.
